The animals that make us scared but impressed at the same time – who are they?! Lions have become an international symbol of strength and independence.

They look gorgeous and self-confident which causes a lot of admiration. But do you really know them?!

Lions pride

The groups that they get together in are called prides. As for their duties, it is surprising how the female lions are better hunters than the males.

Sometimes it becomes difficult for them as the animals they hunt for are small and fast. That’s why the females get together and have a lions group hunt so that they can get something for the whole pride.

It makes them very smart animals.

Even though lions are strong and scary animals, they are not that hard-working. If you wonder how they spend their days, it is just sleeping most of the time.

Because of the weather of their natural habitat, which is Africa, it is easier for them to relax during the day when it’s hot but wake up and hunt at night.

The females are extremely kind and really good mothers. They always take care of their children and never abandon them. Moreover, if they see the cubs that are left without parents they will surely take care of them too and accept them as their own.

Lions roaring

lion facts

It is obvious that they have to have some kind of communication in order to have good connection with each other in the pride. If they are far away they have to roar. You can hear it at a distance of 8 km!

That’s how they announce about the danger or the food that they found.

The other reason why they tend to hunt during the night is that they can see really well in the darkness. They are strong, fast, and they can never be wrong during the night.

However, it’s not only roar that they use a sign of communication. There are a lot of things apart from that that help them exchange the information. It’s not only technical messages, they also have their “etiquette”.

For example, if they want to say hi to the other lion, they should rub heads or lick each other. Except from that lions also produce sounds like hissing and purring – just like your cat! It is very interesting to hear it.

The difference between a male and a female lion can be seen quite easy. The first sign is that male lions have a mane. Of course it makes them look inferior and more powerful.

They consider their manes as the sign of good health and an ability to reproduce which is precious for the female lions.

These incredible animals have impressed everyone who has even seen them even in the zoos. They tend to be very calm and relaxed but if something goes wrong they are all ready to fight the very next moment.

They have been very popular in all the cultures. Moreover, their history started millions of years ago and later on appeared in the written texts of the ancient books.

In some countries you can see them in the zoos while in others it is forbidden to keep them there as they are truly wide and they need space. If you go to England though, you will still be able to see them in the circus.

But their motherland is obviously Africa. Different species live in different parts of the continent.

Because lion is the symbol of power, a lot of countries have decided to make it their special symbol. Among the countries that did it are Belgium, Ethiopia and Singapore.

The lifetime of a lion is usually not more than 12 years.

If we talk about the animals that lions are not able of catching or even are scared of, those are definitely... porcupines!

It might surprise you because they are a lot smaller than lions but they have thorns which protect them from everyone and even help them kill even big species of animals.

The tail of the lion has tassels which also serve as a mean of communication.  The one who is the leader of the pride can guide the others with the help of his tail! He will show where it is safe for the others to go.

Here are some great quotes about lions that show us their true nature and sometimes compare them with us, people!
