What is Zika virus?
It is vital to understand nature of the virus in order to be able to fight it effectively. Zika refers to Flaviviridae family. It was discovered in Zika Forest (Uganda) in 1947. It is also connected with many other viruses, such as, for example, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile, and Japanese encephalitis. It has become very common in recent years.
It’s spread to the east across the Pacific Ocean between the years 2013-2014 reached French Polynesia, New Caledonia, the Cook Islands, and Easter Island. In 2015, it came to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America (it has reached pandemic levels in those areas).
As for Zika, it usually becomes a cause of Zika fever. It is usually treated by rest. However, the drugs or any other medicines have not been found yet.
Is Zika virus contagious?
The simplest way to get infected is to be bitten by mosquito. The transmission is possible by Aedes varieties of these insects active in daytime.
However, you might calm down. It is not contagious. It was announced and confirmed by the specialists from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Thus, the infection cannot pass from one person to the other. Nevertheless, if mosquito bites person, having Zika, it catches the virus and transfers it to other people it bites.

How to prevent Zika virus?
As there is no medical treatment found yet, it is better to know about possible preventive measures. In fact, all you can do is to avoid mosquitos. The methods are as follows:
• Wear only long-sleeved shirts/long pants.
• Apply window and door screens in order to keep insects outside.
• Use insect repellents.
• Treat clothes and gear with permethrin.
• Sleep only under mosquito bed net.
Besides, if you have babies, it's essential to protect them as well. However, it is impossible to use sprays. Special screens and nets are a good way out.
Can Zika virus affect future pregnancy?
It was proved that virus can transfer from pregnant woman to her future child, as it is able to pass through the womb and placenta. It can cause serious defects of brain for the infants. That’s why special precautions are recommended during pregnancy. It is advisable not to travel to the places, where this virus is spreading. Or at least to talk to a doctor and keep to the preventive measures.
If couple is just planning to have a baby, they should first consult to the specialist and only after this go to vulnerable area. As we have mentioned, there are some reports about sexual transmission.
Can Zika virus affect adults?
The answer to this question is quite obvious. If a mosquito carrying a virus bites you, you may get infected. That’s why it is necessary to protect yourself.
Can Zika virus affect toddlers?
Children are much more vulnerable that grown-ups are. They cannot understand how to protect themselves. That’s why, adults must take care of them. As it has been said, special measures need to be taken. Use nets and screens on carriers and beds. But do not forget, you can’t apply sprays on little babies, as they contain dangerous chemicals.
