How music affects plant growth?

It doesn't matter who you are: a gardener, a housewife, what is important is that you like plants! If you want to know some secrets about successful plants growing, let's discover it together!

The effect of music on plants was noted in ancient times. So, in Indian legends, it is mentioned that when God  Krishna played on the harp, rose opened up right in front of astonished listeners. In many countries believed that the song or music improves health and growth of plants and promotes abundant crops. But only in the 20th century, evidence of the impact of music on plants has been obtained in the result of tests conducted under strictly controlled conditions by independent researchers from different countries.

Research in Sweden in the 70s:

 Scientists from the Swedish music-therapeutic society were established that the plasma cells of plant organisms move much faster under the influence of music.

Study in the USA:

Dorothy Retallack conducted a series of experiments regarding the effect of music on plants, in which the regularities associated with the dose sound effects on the plants, as well as with certain kinds of influencing music.

The duration of music matters!

Three experimental groups of plants were kept in the same conditions when the first group is not "voiced" music, the second listened to music for 3 hours daily, and the third for 8 hours daily. In the end, plants from the second group increased significantly more than plants the first control group, but those plants that were forced to listen to music eight hours a day died within two weeks from the start of the experiment. In fact, Dorothy Retallack got a result similar to that previously obtained in experiments to determine the effect of background noise on factory workers when it was established that if music is played continuously, the workers are more tired and less productive than if there was no music at all;

The style of music matters!

 Listening to classical music leads to an increase in productivity, while the hard rock causes the death of plants. Two weeks after the start of the experiment the plants "listening" classics, have become uniform in size, lush and green and blooming actively. Plants that got the hard rock grew extremely tall and thin not bloomed, and soon all died. Surprisingly, the plants that listened to classical music, reaching toward the source of sound as well as usually drawn to the light source;

Experiments have shown that classical music has a positive effect on plants, contribute to its active growth and development – growth cutting and the root system was more in the group, which included classical music.

The effect of music on plants depends on sound frequency:

  • wave frequency -6 kHz positive effect on the development and flowering of plants, the germination of seeds;
  • Sound waves 7-9 kHz slow growth and development;
  • Sound waves more than 10 kHz can destroy the plant.
  • Therefore classical music (frequency 3 to 5 kHz) influence right on plants, and rock music (more than 8 kHz) is depressing.

So if you like listening music or watch video clips, the plants will love to hear to classical music. And rock music is better not to listen where a lot of plants are.

Instruments of music matter!

Another experiment was that the plants included similar-sounding music that can be attributed to the classic: for the first group – the organ music of Bach's authorship, for the second North Indian classical music performed by sitar (stringed instrument) and tabla (drums). In both cases, the plants leaned towards the source of the sound, but the dynamics of North-Indian classical music tilt was much more pronounced.

Research in the Netherlands:

Dorothy Retallack had an experiment of the negative impact of rock music. Three nearby fields were planted with seed of the same origin, and then "voiced" respectively, classical, folk and rock music. After some time, on the third-floor plants either wilted or disappeared altogether. Thus, the effect of music on plants, intuitively suspected previously, now scientifically proven. Based on scientific data and the wave of interest appeared in the sale of a variety of devices, to a greater or lesser degree of scientific and designed to increase the yield and improve the condition of the plants. For example, in France, are popular "superheroine" CD-disks with records specially selected pieces of classical music. There are themed audio for purposeful impact on plants in America.They influence on increasing size, increasing the number of ovaries and so on. In China in the greenhouse long set "audio generators" that transmit different sound waves that contribute to enhancing the processes of photosynthesis and stimulate plant growth taking into account "taste" distinct varieties of plants.
