Bible vs. Science: When will the world end?

What do Bible and science say about the end of the world and when it is going to take place? Do they have a common position about it or different ones? Learn more form the article.

world end

The question of the end of times or the end of the world as other people call it is always topical. We all want to know whether it is ever going to happen, and if so, then how many more years we have ahead. You can see how intriguing and interesting this topic is from the growing number of movies about it. People try to guess what it will look like and how they will react when the end of the world really takes place. However, let’s see what science vs. Bible think about it, and how they picture the end of times.

What Bible says about it?

Let’s start with what the Bible teaches about the end of times. This question was raised by the disciples back at the time when Jesus was still with them. They thought about it back then and were quite worried. Jesus answered them:

“There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. "Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN A CLOUD with power and great glory. But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." (Luke 21:25-28)

However, this is not a full explanation. In a different place Jesus made it clear how exactly the end of the world will look like (Matthew 25:4-44):

  1. there will be a lot of false prophets at that time  (“For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many”)
  2. It will be a time of turbulence and wars (“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom”
  3. Natural disasters will take place (“and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”)
  4. People will get aggressive against Christians (“Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.”)
  5. Some Christians will lose faith (“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”)
  6. All the peoples will hear about Jesus Christ (“And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”)
    end of the world
  7. Then people will have to run away (“ When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
  8. This won’t last for too long (“And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.”)
  9. Only those trusting Jesus Christ will be saved afterwards (“Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.”)

  10. More false miracle makers will emerge (“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”)
  11. Natural signs will take place for all people to see them (“Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken”)
    when will the world end
  12. Finally, Jesus Christ, God in flesh will come (“And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”)
  13. No one knows when this time comes but God (“But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”)

The main point is that no one knows when the end of the world will take place: that is absolutely up to God. He surely left some hints and guidance for His people; however, He did not reveal the timing.

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” (Matthew 24:42-44)

end of the world movies

He did this for a reason: people should not postpone coming to God and repenting before Him, as they do not know when the time comes for Him to put an end to this world.

What science says about the end of the world?

Meanwhile, scientists also asked the question of when the world will end thousands of times.  Their opinions on this matter are different. However, here is what the vast majority of them think about this. It is interesting that scholars also agree that at some point in its existence, our tiny little planet will disappear. They agree that there is no way it can exist forever considering the scientific perspective on the issue.

Scholars have several options on how the end of the world will look like. One group of scientific minds believe that a massive asteroid will smash our planet out of a sudden at some point. Others state that the world will end if our planet comes a little bit closer to a bright hot star we call the sun. There are other scientists that suggest that we will see the end of the world after our galaxy gets sucked into a black hole, a notion not yet studied adequately by the science. Another group of scientific researchers believes that the world we know it now will cease its existence when we get back to the “singularity” – a state when our planet gets compressed from diversity and plurality it exists in now.

world end today

As you can notice from all these statements, all the scholars come to a conclusion that the end of the world will come when something catastrophic happens. Just as well, Christians believe the same thing.

To sum up, no one knows the date, and both Bible and science agree here. Also, both of these sources state that when that day comes, everyone will notice it. It will be epic and quite spectacular. However, I guess not the way people try to show it in the movies about the end of the world. The world might be ending soon, so take heart and make important decisions today.
