What 10 Google tools we didn't know exited?

Nowadays Google search engine is very popular. Every day we search something and we don’t mention it now. But what was at the moment when Google had just appeared? Let’s learn it together!

Little prehistory the emergence of the Google search engine:

Google appeared in March 1998 as a research project of Larry Paige and Sergey Brin: Stanford’s students worked on the Stanford Digital Library Project (SDLP). SDLP was the purpose of "Developing forward-looking technologies for a single, integrated and universal digital library" and was funded by the National science Foundation.

His supervisor, Terry Grapes, recommended him to pick this idea (Paige later recalled that like "the best advice I ever got") and than he focused on the problem of finding out which web pages link refer to a given page, considering the number and nature of such backlinks from the perspective of value of information on page (by analogy with the role of citations in scientific publications). Soon Sergey Brin graduate student Ph.D. Stanford joined this research project called "BackRub".

Brin was a close friend of Paige, they met in the summer of 1995, Paige was in the group of first-year students which Brin had voluntarily offered to show the University campus. To convert the collected data to the level of importance of given web page, Brin and Paige developed the PageRank algorithm. After analyzing the results of BackRub, which consisted of a list of URLS, they realized that the search engine based on PageRank would produce good results than already existing search algorithms.

A similar strategy of ranging of page and its rating has already researched Robin Li. in 1996 He developed a small search engine "RankDex" from IDD Information Services. The technology in RankDex was patented and used later when Li based Baidu in China.

Page and Brin were convinced that the pages with the large number of links on them from other pages with a high rating should be the most relevant in search, and this became the basis of their search engine.

Officially, Google was registered on 4 of September in 1998 in the garage in Menlo Park, California.

Although the corporation was founded on 4 of September 1998, and domain Google.com was registered on 15 of September 1997, the search engine (since 2000) sometimes celebrates his birthday on 7 or 28 of September.

The name "Google" comes from the word "googol" meaning the number 1 with a hundred zeros. Frequently used in everyday language, the verb "to google" in 2006 was added to the Oxford English Dictionary with the meaning "using Google to search the Internet."

Larry Paige was the first who used the word as a verb. He has signed one of his messages (8 of Juli, 1998) to the mailing list: "Have fun and keep googling!  Then American dialectical community called the verb "to google"  the word of the decade.

So, Google tools kit!

Most of people know how to use Google to search something; you must go to the home page, than you enter key words, than click SEARCH and finally get a list of results. But the Google search engine has a lot of interesting features besides the main search function. These features help us to find the most suitable answer to your question much faster and more accurate. By the way, this search engine has other interesting tools, such as a timer, and also very funny, but unnecessary tools.

  •  How to know what is shown in the picture?

If you find any interesting image and want to know what or who is represented here, or who its author is, try to go on images.google.com and move a picture into the search bar. You don’t need to download the picture - just click on it with the mouse, hold and drag it to a new tab (which opens automatically) and direct on the search.

  •  How to know the meaning of words?

If you enter a search bar "define:" and the next you enter search word or phrase, Google will give you the meaning of this word or phrase. For example, "define:off the kilt".

  • How to know the time in any city of the world?

Enter on a search bar: "time:", then specify the place you want to know the time. For example "time:africa"

  • Set the timer

Just type in the search bar "set a timer for 5seconds (or 5 minutes or 5 hours) and by the passage of time Google you signals.

There are many pictures of space. And this isn’t abstract beautiful pictures, it’s the results of work of the Hubble space telescope and instruments on different satellites. The merit of the programmers of the company is an easy navigation. To make space travel you need to follow the link google.com/sky

Google has sense of humor too, so there is a joke from Google;

  • Service nGrams

It’s a useful tool for writers and historians, a search mechanism for the texts of books in open access. It is interesting to see how often a certain word was used in the literature in different years. For example, the word "revolution" became popular about the beginning of the First World War and a total change of social systems in the European powers. Link – https://books.google.com/ngrams.

  • The number are expressed by the letters

The English version of the search engine is equipped with the function for those who haven’t learned how to write correctly the numbers in a word form. Google can help and give a grammatically correct combination. You only need to write the “number=english” in the search bar. However, more than 12-digit number the system refuses to understand.

  •  Google Art Project

Art goes to the masses. The contemporary people have lost the habit to visit the museums and art galleries, preferring to see the digitized version of the world's masterpieces on their PC.
