How to perform ghusl in 5 steps

Ghusl is something that any muslim should know how to perfrom. This ritual bathing helps believers to stay clean and close to god.

Many religious imply the use of special obligatory body washings performed after certain incidents or before specific rituals. Ghusl is one of them. It is done by those confessing Islam. There are several types of Ghusl. They mainly named after the occasions they are used for.

Others are for men only, but there are also the general ones performed by people of both genders.General ghusl:

  • Ghusl Janabat
    It is done after each intercourse or a wet dream. Basically a man has to perform it after any semen ejaculation.

Ghusl for women:

  • Ghusl Nifas
     It is performed by a woman with bleeding after the child birth.
  • Ghusl Hayd
    Performed after every period.
  • Ghusl Istihadad 
    It is done after any irregular bleeding.

How to perform ghusl in 5 steps:
When ghusl is nullified

  1. Find water
    Not all the water is suitable to religious obligatory full body washing. One should use only clean water. It can be rain, river, well, pond or stream water. You cannot utilize the water previously used for ghusl. You should not also use the water from the trees or the one utilized for washing fruits.
  2. Start with your hands
    Most reputable Islam sources recommend to start ablution by washing hands and arms. Carefully clean your fingers and hands up to the elbows.
  3. Wash your private parts
    This should be done in any case, even if no impurity was done (no bleeding and no sexual activity).
  4. Wash your entire body
    You should pour the water thrice. It has to cover all the parts and thoroughly clean them. No dry spot should be left. Do not forget to rinse your mouth, too.
  5. Pour water over your head
    You should do it three times and clean your hair, too. You can touch the roots of the hair with your fingers and make them go to the ends. Finally move to your feet, if you have not cleaned them and finish up your ghusl.

    If a woman wears braids, there is no need to undo them. She may just pour the water over her hair thrice and that would be enough.

It is also highly recommended to do ghusl before various occasions. Friday prayer or Jummah Congregational is the one. It can also be done before Hajj and before the Eid prayers. In this case ghusl should be done just for the sake of prayer, even if no impure activity was involved (najasa).

However, this is not required for all Muslims.
In most cases one ablution lasts for several prayers until its nullification.

All the body parts such as feet or hands would shine, if the person used to do the ritual washings.
Besides when one does ghusl or other washings properly, all the old sins get washed away. The face washing cleanses all the iniquities a person had to watch and see with their eyes.

When ghusl is nullified

There are certain things that null the ablution and make it necessary to repeat it again. Here is a short list of such things:

  • hadath
    This means the issue of gassed out of one’s anus. Every time that happens the washing is broken and a person should not start the prayer before repeating it.
  • Sleep
    Mohammad believed hand washing was needed after one wakes up to purify the hands.
  • eating food touched by fire
  • failing to wash even one body part
    All the body parts have to be washed and wetted, otherwise the ghusl is not considered to be effective.
  • sexual activities
    The body has  to be washed after each intercourse, even if a person plans to repeat it soon after.

When you can pray without ghusl

There are cases, when a person is allowed to pray instead of doing the body washing. It implies those situations, when water is not available or no clean water is to be found. It can also be done, when a person has only cold water with no means of heating it up. Or the person travels or stays in a mosque for a long period of time.
