The church is very confused with a question: 'What to do with preachers who commit adultery?' In the last ten years, it several times endured serious shocks because of number of revelations in immorality. It was talked of the most dear evangelical leaders and pastors. How to treat thosepastors who have committed adultery, have drawn a shame upon themselves, their families and have depreciated their service?
Usually there is a following situation: if a pastor commits adultery, he professes a sin often with deep destruction. Local church or elder brothers from association order him the term, during which he receives professional counseling help. Then he is restored in service and sometimes transferred to other church. Usually such pastors are considered as wounded healers – that are those who on their own experience know that is falling and who have endured God's grace in special way.

Though each situation should be considered with pastoral wisdom, and some fallen preachers would be correct to restore (as an exception), the scenario described above, however, is unbiblical. And it unfortunately gains the increasing popularity. Therefore, list of pastors who committed adultery, grows. It not only contradicts the Bible, but also strongly harms spiritual wellbeing of fallen pastors, their marriage and the Church of Jesus Christ. Our Lord Jesus was tempted in all spheres of life and remained faithful in everything. There was his spiritual power in it. Does lack of falling in his life mean that he hasn't learned deeper grace of the Father? It is necessary to understand a simple thing: speaking about knowledge of bigger grace of falling and better efficiency of service as a result of experience of such grace, we unconsciously push people to this mortal sin – adultery.
According to quite popular opinion, if God recognized somebody suitable for service once, then such person even after serious sin doesn't lose his 'qualification' if he has sincerely regretted and received forgiveness from God. In other words, God's forgiveness is a basis of service preservation. It means that if God has forgiven him, people have to forgive and restore this pastor too.
Adultery is not just a sin, which disqualifies pastor. It became real problem for church of our time. It is very obvious, visible sin bearing an abuse of Church of Christ and destroying belief of many Christians.
Most of all sin of pastoral adultery is terrible with the fact that it leads to abuse of power. Deep pain, which is caused by fallen pastors, brings a lot of suffering to their wives. So preacher, making adultery sin, profanes his calling, uses his power against other people and becomes the terrible destroyer of belief.
Pastors wives who commit adultery are also considered as great sinners. However, their sin is regarded as smaller, because they don't take leading position in church. Such wives have to apologize to the Lord too.
