1.    James Cleveland

James Cleveland

The Reverend Dr. Cleveland is the first in our list. He was born in 1931 and ended with his death in 1991. He devoted whole his life to the gospel music.  A singer in his right, Dr. Cleveland recorded with gospel choirs including the Caravans, Gospelaires, Southern California Community Choir, Charles Fold Singers and the Angelic Choir.

2.    Roebuck "Pops" Staples

Pops is the part of the family group of singers. It included Pervis, Cleotha, Yvonne, and Mavis. Pops is known for the tunes "Let's Do It Again" and "I'll Take You There." He died in 2000.

3.    Donnie McClurkin


Donnie McClurkin is a pastor and gospel singer. He has plenty of Awards, which include Grammy and Steller Awards, BET and Soul Train recognition, as well as a Dove Award and a NAACP Image Award.

4.    Ben Harper

Ben Harper

 Ben Harper was born as Benjamin Chase Harper. He sings in such styles as reggae, rock, blues and folk tunes. He took a Grammy Award for "Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album" in 2004. He got it for his release "There Will Be a Light" recorded with the Blind Boys of Alabama.

James Blackwood

 James Blackwood was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1974. Also, he is a winner of a handful of Dove Awards for gospel singing.

6.    Marvin Louis Sapp

Marvin Louis Sapp

Pastor Marvin Louis Sapp is an American Gospel music singer-songwriter who recorded with the group Commissioned during the 1990s before beginning a record-breaking solo career. Sapp is also the founder and senior pastor of Lighthouse Full Life Center Church, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Bill Gaither

Bill Gaither is a leader of the well-known gospel group, called The Gaither Family. Bill released his first song in 1956 and over the decades has taken operated a music publishing company, record label and sponsored a group of gospel and Christian-based musicians from the corporate headquarters in Indiana.

Edward Hawkins

Edward Hawkins had a very long career and died in 2010. He got Grammy Award in the 1980s.  Edward Hawkins recorded his last song with rock and jazz performer Van Morrison. He was part of a singing family that included his brother Edwin and also soloists work with the Love Center Choir.

Lyle Stubbs

Lyle Stubbs was top male gospel singer in 2000.  His songs have appeared on Circuit Rider Record gospel compilation disks. Lyle Stubbs is known for such  compositions as "Jesus Asked Me Out to Play"  and "You Saved My Soul From a Burning Hell."

10.    Al Green

Al Green

Al Green started as a pop artist but then moved into gospel. He received eight Grammy Awards for "Soul Gospel Performance" from 1981 through 1989.  Green became an ordained minister in 1976. In 1995 Green was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  However, his main focus has been gospel.
