Atheist is a man convinced that God does not exist. This outlook applies not one single religion, but all the known beliefs in general. Because of this vital position atheists have become enemies of all people who believe, that, in fact, is not surprising at all. But there is one problem, most of people do not get the sense of atheism.

Therefore, we will discuss this topic in details, rejecting prejudices and established views. After all, it is the only way to understand what is really behind this loud concept.

What is an atheist? Atheist definition.  Atheist meaning.

who is atheist

Atheism is a specific way of life that is totally based on the fact that there is nothing supernatural in the world: God, the devil, angels and spirits. Consequently, an atheist is a man, who fully supports this philosophical concept.

In his convictions he denies any manifestation of divine powers, including the creation of the world by the will of Almighty God. Also he denies the existence of any human soul, in any case at least in the form in which the churches present it.

History of Atheism

history of atheism

Atheist and believer are the two opposing sides, which appeared in the same time. There were always some people questioning the words of the leader or priest, seeing their selfish thoughts and thirst for power. Regarding to more accurate information, the first written evidence of atheism was Harper's Songs written in the ancient Egyptian language. It describes the poet's doubts about the afterlife.

The following symptoms of atheism can be found in the different works of Diagorasthe, the ancient Greek philosopher. Also the same opinion was shown by the Roman philosopher Lucretius, who was born in 99 BC.

When the Roman Catholic Church came to power, there were less followers of atheism, because no one wanted to anger the already fierce inquisition. And only with the indulgence of Pope’s authority, science, and also atheism again began to grow rapidly. Basics atheist outlooks

Religious people believe that an atheist is a person, who believes in the absence of God. That atheism is also something like a religion, but instead its supporters worship the deity cult of man, and the dogmas are replaced by scientific articles and theories.

Thinking atheist hearing this statement will only smile, because if to follow this idea, then a bald head is also a kind of hair. There is even a comic expression: ‘If an atheist does not smoke tobacco, so he smokes his absence’. Yet the ideas of the believers regarding this issue remains unchanged, despite the claims of their opponents.

Atheist VS agnostic. Atheist beliefs

atheist book

The agnostic believes that it is totally impossible to know the truth in all matters of the existence of God or eternal life, which are associated with Christianity and other different religions. Or, if it's not impossible at all, at least, it is not currently possible. The agnostic abstains from judgment whether God exists, saying that there is no sufficient basis to confirm or to deny these ideas.

As for the outlooks of atheists, they are all very simple and can be easily formulated.

1. Everything in our world can be explained by dint of science. And it’s totally despite the fact that there are so many questions that scientists still cannot answer. But atheists believe that this is likely due to the low level of progress, rather than to the divine principle of the phenomena.

2. There is no God, at least in the form in which it is presented by modern religions. According to atheists, all beliefs are absurd, as invented by people.

3. The supreme creation is a person, so you have to live your life studying yourself, but not in the service of the invisible substance.

These are the main principles of atheism. But we must understand that, as in any philosophical stream, there is also a place for disagreement. So, there are non-believers, who are inclined to humanism, others prefer naturalism and the third ones are radically disposed towards the clergy and their flock. Also there are atheist symbols. Main problem

atheism stream

Now let’s talk about the disputes between believers and atheists or rather what prevents any of them to prove their ideas to the opponents. Everything is simple – the lack of direct evidence.

The believers - they cannot show real evidence of the existence of God. Sacred texts are written by human hand, miracles are only stories told by the righteous, the afterlife - if it exists, none of people has returned from there yet. All religion is based on blind faith, consequently, it can’t be proved.

But atheists have the same problem. Ok, the scientists can explain what a rainbow, rain, shining stars, and even death is, but they are not able to do the main thing - to bring the real evidence of the absence of God. Because God is a transcendental being therefore it cannot be measured by known methods. Therefore, the theory of divine forces cannot be refuted at the moment.

Accordingly, the dispute between the atheists and believers is a double-edged sword. However, during recent years the church has begun to lose its position, and the reason of this is the rapid progress that can shed light on the plenty of divine matters.

Famous atheists

There are atheists, whose names are well-known to all.  Among them: Bill Gates, George Bernard Shaw, Clinton Richard Dawkins, Jack Nicholson, and Sigmund Freud. A well-known Russian atheists - is Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin.

As for the common people, everyone has to decide it himself: to be a believer or to accept the arguments of science.

"Atheist is a man convinced that God does not exist."

No, an atheist is a person (of any sex, FWIW) who is unconvinced God[s] exist...

The author is an idiot. First off, the word "atheist" is a noun, not an adjective. A person can be an atheist. A person isn't "atheist".

Second, atheism is the lack of belief in gods - that's it. You can know nothing else about a person if that's all you have on them. There is no "philosophical viewpoint" or anything of the like. An atheist doesn't "deny" anything. They are merely just without belief. They CAN "deny" things..but the word "atheist/atheism" don't tell us anything about that.

There are no "main principles of atheism".

Just get an education before you write. I mean sheesh, you have Google, no?

The definition at http://www.dictionary.com/browse/atheism gives two definitions:

1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.

2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

The first definition is strong atheism. The second is weak atheism. Both definitions are atheism, the second definition fits most atheists, the first is a minor subset of all atheists. The author attempts to ignore definition 2.

Scroll down further on the dictionary.com page for atheism and you will see the British Dictionary single definition:

1. rejection of belief in God or gods

Once more, absolutely nothing about being convinced that “God” does not exist. Someone makes the claim, “God exists,” an atheist doesn’t believe it, that is, he rejects it. Some people have difficulty understanding the difference between disbelief and denial. They are not the same. Disbelief in the truth of a proposition cannot be treated as equivalent to the belief that the proposition is false and that the opposite is true. We really can’t even choose what we truly believe or don't believe. I don’t believe in alien abductions, and I could not choose otherwise, but that doesn’t mean I am absolutely convinced that no one has ever been abducted.

The dictionary.com page also links to it’s definition of an agnosticism and defines it as: an intellectual doctrine or attitude affirming the uncertainty of all claims to ultimate knowledge.

What has this to do with belief/disbelief or how it defines a middle ground. One surely can believe something is true or lack that belief without having certainty of ultimate knowledge.

Subconsciously perhaps, the author may be trying to shift the burden of proof by redefining atheism in general as specifically strong atheism. Rather than use the more appropriate word arrangement, - “ An atheist is a man unconvinced that a god exists," the author chooses to define atheists as those who are convinced “God” doesn’t exist. Note also that, for some reason, the author can’t seem to bring himself to refer to gods in general. Capital G god is typically associated with Christianity.

Perhaps (I'm being generous) the author means “out” or “open” when he referred to “followers” of atheism. It’s not just Catholics who atheists have to look out for. Belief in god(s) can lead to murder and oppression, particularly if people sincerely believe they have a command from their god(s) to kill and oppress infidels (many do.) Some believers still kill atheists to this day. There are few “out” atheists in Saudi Arabia. Being raised in a culture where it is socially unacceptable to question belief and childhood indoctrination is intense, one would expect to see few atheists.

The burden of proof shifting continues when the author try to define being agnostic. Belief is binary. It is absolutely possible to take a position without knowledge. Agnosticism is not a middle ground. If you don’t actively believe, you’re an atheist. If you “abstain from judgement,” you’re not a theist - you’re an atheist. The author describes himself as an agnostic theist since he writes that believers cannot show real evidence and all religion is based on blind faith. He says all theists lack real evidence and thus real knowledge of the existence of gods. By that definition all theists are agnostic - i.e. without knowledge.

First the author did not give a definition of an atheist but of atheism.

In any event, Newbie does not state exactly what is wrong with the author’s definition. Newbies does not give the "dictionary" definition either. And finally he does not give his own definition.

He just says that the author writes out of ignorance and eventually just resorts to name calling like "buffoon".

When some people have nothing to say about a topic they attack the messenger and resort to ad hominem attacks.

The author gave his definition as "Atheism is a specific way of life that is totally based on the fact that there is nothing supernatural in the world: God, the devil, angels and spirits. "

The definition at http://www.dictionary.com/browse/atheism states that atheism is “the doctrine or belief that there is no God or disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.”

The author seems to me to be expressing the same thoughts but with just more detail.

So what makes him ignorant or a buffoon?

If you look up the word atheist in a current dictionary, you can find the proper definition, which is not what you seem to think it is. If you were to use a dictionary, it might save you time so that, instead of writing articles based on complete ignorance, you could write articles that didn't make you look like a buffoon.
