Can babies be created without eggs? Check out what scientists say

According to the published research in the journal Nature Communications it can be said that scientists have succeeded in the birth of healthy mice, "persuading" the spermatozoids that they fertilizes a normal egg.

This means, as scientists believe that in the distant future childbearing process may be possible without the participation of women.

At this stage, the experiments help to understand better the process of fertilization.

Without Mom and Dad?

The experiments, scientists of the University of the British city of Bath started with an unfertilized egg.

With the help of various chemicals, they managed to "trick" to turn it into pseudo-embryon.

Such pseudo-embryons a lot like normal cells, such as skin cells. They can share and control their DNA.

The researchers hypothesized that by introducing a sperm into such mice’s pseudo-embryon can give the possibility to achieve the birth of a healthy mouse progeny, this means that in the future such a result can be achieved in the human cells, which are not derived from the egg.

In experiments on mice, the likelihood of achieving a successful pregnancy was 25%.

"For the first time they have been able to prove that sperm in conjunction with other, unrelated to the egg cells, is able to produce healthy offspring," – said one of the researchers, Dr. Tony Perry.

"It turns all our centuries-old views", - he added.

Born as a result of the experiment mice were healthy, had a normal life span and were able to give birth to healthy offspring.

The purpose of the experiments was to investigate the precise mechanism of fertilization. What exactly is going on at the time of fusion of sperm and egg, until the end of yet has not clarified.

The egg, for example, is completely changing the entire chemical shell sperm DNA. As a result, sperm ceases to behave as such, and behaves like an embryo. But how this "transformation" is held is not clear.

Eliminating the need for the egg from childbirth process can have far-reaching social consequences.

"One of the features in the distant future is that normal cells in the human body, combined with sperm may form an embryo" - Dr. Perry said.

In other words, the two men could be equally biological parents of their child: one gives normal cells, and the other sperm.

Or the parent of the child may become a man using his sperm and his own cells. In this case, the child will be born not so much a clone as fraternal twins of the parent.

So far, however, as stressed by Dr. Perry, similar scenarios are within the scope "of speculative fantasies".

This year, the Chinese experts managed to work out the sperm from stem cells of mice, and then use that sperm to fertilize the egg, resulting in healthy mice were born.

The combination of these two experiments, says Dr. Perry, may ultimately lead to the possibility of procreation without the participation of sperm and egg.

"It is not surprising that the authors of the experiments are encouraged with the results", - said Professor Robin Lovell-Badge of the British biomedical named Francis Crick's research center.

"This is a very interesting study and a technological point of view, a remarkable achievement. It can reveal many things at an early stage of development of the body's processes, is very important both for fertilization and for transferring a cell nucleus [cloning]", - he said.

But in a broader sense, it helps to identify the mechanisms of reprogramming cells and in other situations as it happens, we are not yet clear, but certain indicators in this direction, this study surely provides.
