Chemotaxis - a targeted cell migration (locomotion) in the direction of increasing concentrations of chemotactic factors (chemotaxin).
This process requires the following conditions: a) recognition and binding to specific receptors chemotaxin cytoplasmic membrane; b) targeted migration.
Chemotaxin corresponding receptors and functionally related to each other. Phagocytes are capable of specifically binding a large number of water-soluble substances, and to respond to their presence by activation of cells. In the event that the activator creates a gradient of concentrations, cell migration occurs towards higher concentrations. Therefore, the term "chemotaxin" is relative. At low concentrations of activator observed spontaneous migration in the area of maximum concentration - inhibition of migration.
