Formerly the capital of Nigeria was in Lagos State, Lagos city. It was initially inhabited by Yoruba tribe people. First Europeans who came to Lagos were Portuguese, later on in 1861 the city and the surrounding territories were annexed by UK. Ten years later the population of the city increased to 60 thousands and it turned into a large trading center. Since that time Lagos play a key role in Nigerian history. Lagos remained the capital of the country until 1991, then the status was passed on to Abuja.
