Man UTd Spends 18.6 Million Pounds On Michael Carrick. Does He Worth It ?
i just wish carrick proves his mettle at the theatre of dreams
yeah rite, he's a leg end
and wat legacy did he live behind, l
as far as i am concerned the legacy he left behind has nothing to do with football, he's a fcukin celebrity, his life revolves around victoria beckham,
there a public figure, and i feel it has got him distracted, he has his face on more magazines than anyother footballer, not because he is good, but because of endorsements and of course his wife,
don't get me wrong i love beckham, i started loving him when he played for real madrid, he was a better player in real madrid than in manutd,
Beckham's free-kick is top-notch and this is not the only quality he has got.
David is by miles the best dead-ball specialist.
No individual player crosses the ball with precision than David Beckham.
Can Juninho/Mihaljovic or Roberto Carlos cross with Precision?
Beckham delivers the ball inch-perfectly and he makes the job of a striker so freakin easy.
Beckham will stroll with ease into any national team with his astounding natural ability.
U need to go take a look at the goals Beckham has scored in his career.
Who can forget the spectacular goal he scored against Wimbledon in 1996.
Beckham saw the goalie standing a long way out of his goal and he took a shot from the halfway line that floated over the goalkeeper and into the net.
I saw a comparison between Beckham and Mihajlovic - on what basis? Hype or what?
The kind of freekick he scored against Greece? what about Ronaldinho's against England?
I remeber even @ 35, Mihajlovic was brought in as a substitute and he scored 2 to equalise for Inter (freekicks of course). No doubt, he is the best free kick taker ever in history (Roberto Rivelino, i didnt see him play). (check out his stats on PS games if you doubt).
a player who scores 12 freekicks in a season is a legend (Juninho has 29 goals from dead balls since joining Lyon)
Beckham bends the ball quite alright, I should say even better than anyone else does, but freekick precision is not only about curves jare. When I think freekicks, i think of:
Mihajlovic, Rivaldo, Carlos, Piero, Pirlo, Henry, Juninho, Ronaldinho, Beckham, Recoba, Totti, and Van Hooijdonk.

Nesta and Cannavaro are the best defensive pairing in the world for many years running now. I dont know what u are talking by mentioning Rio and Terry. Those two are good defenders but come on?
I gave u a wing 4 wing analysis and u could only argue one, and even that one people disagree with u. Non of those English players will get into the Italian National side. People like Lampard, Joe Cole, Carrick, Walcot, Crouch, Carragher, Jenas, Downing,Owen, Bridge and a few other hopelessly hyped mediocares WILL NOT make the first 23.
The rest including the Terrys and Ferdinands, Beckhams and the rest WILL SIT out on the bench.
The only ones that may have a chance of beign in the First eleven is Gerrard and maybe Ashley Cole and its only a Maybe.
Which of them either can get into the Brazilian and Argentine national teams?
Besides talking about world defenders there are a lot of them in ahead of Rio and Terry in the pecking order
Nesta, Cannavaro, Lucio, Ayala, Thuram and Puyol are all examples of a world class defenders (though i might be tempted to add Rio) Il even pick Cris ahead of those English duo
Dont take this personal.
I wasnt refering to Kolo Toure. I was only trying to tell debosky that consistency doesn't make player A better than B.
The optimum performance is the key.
A student that gets 10% every time is consistent with his failures.
Its so amazing that when we see consistent as a word, we are quick to think its always attached to something positive but its not so.
For example, David James is consistent,
Why? His errors never cease.
U r entitled to ur own opinions.
I know Rooney,Terry, Ferdinand, Beckham and Gerrard will play for any national team in the world.
Ashley Cole will struggle to make the bench but the 5 lads mentioned above are world class players that have proven their mettle times without number.
unlike you i don't give every player who is above average and improving the title 'world class', even if he plays for my team that term is reserved for the BEST. Toure is very good and fast improving, no doubt, but he is not world class yet, if he keeps up these performances for another 2 seasons, then maybe i'll consider.
yeah thank God he isnt british, if not hype wdve started killing his career.
so he's more consistent than your 'world class' rio and terry?
dude read my posts carefully i called mendieta a has been, which is what he has become since moving to 'borough.
by that time they had already lost the match due to raul + ronaldo's brilliance, there was NO WAY they cd win, thats why madrid allowed them to score.
look the only 'world class' defenders you have named are the english above averages - rio and terry. did he score against sevilla? how many goals did he score in the UEFA cup? he took ferdinand apart, ok? even if i was rio's mum i wdve been ashamed that day.
arsenal has NO world class defender, unless you count senderos as one, so yak disgracing them is not a big deal to me.
your terry and rio are not world class, accept it,t hey are above average i'll give them that, but no more.
Man Utd won the match at OT but did not qualify because of goals difference.
Beckham scored the equaliser and the winning goal at OT to make the scores 4-3.
Can u tell me any world class defender Yaks didn't disgrace last season.
The same Yak made Terry look like a school boy defender when Boro hammered Chelsea 3-0.
Yakubu was also on song when he ran chaos at the Gunners defence and he did the same thing to Ferdinand as well.
Mendieta is a world class player unless u started watching Champions League after Roman took over Chelsea.
Mendieta was the ace at Valencia when Hector Cuper was calling the shotz at the Spanish side.
He steered Valencia to 2 consecutive UEFA finals and that was no fluke.
lordi don't misunderstand me, compared to beckham most if not all english players are mediocre, i wasn't comparing him to those greatplayers who decided to grace the premiership.
jackal you said it again he scored for england (the team of mediocres carried by an above average player)
after scoring against casillas did man u win? go look at the goal raul scored that day, it is still one of the best ever goals in the CL.
dude if cannavaro is messed up by dinho and henry, he won;t feel bad, They Are world class. but a supposedly 'world class' rio being messed up by has been mendieta and a young buck like yak? thats a disgrace.
Ohhhh Ma Days.
These guys are cracking me up.
So u think a freak is a better player because he scored hatrick through set pieces?
Let us look at the situations where Beckham has scored free-kicks for his team.
Can any of y'all remember England Vs Greece at Old Trafford?
How David Beckham's last minute free-kick earned England a deserved draw?
What about his freak free-kick against Real Madrid at the 2002/03 Champions League.
Beckham came in from the sub bench and United was losing 2-3 to the Spaniards and the ball just sailed into the net.
Iker Cassilas didnt move a muscle let alone attempting to save the ball.
I can go on and on but lemme stop here.
David Beckham is a world class player. English hype or not.
Afterall, he is not the only English player around.
Is there any defender in the world that hasn't been outplayed or outsmarted before? Hell Nahhhhh
I remember Ronaldinho making a meal outta Nesta. Thierry Henry also made a mincemeat outta Cannavaro and so on and forth.
Even legends like Franco Baresi and Maldini has been outwitted and outfought before by smart strikers.
Lets not base how good these defenders are on Yakubu or Mendieta.
so wat r u tryin to say, that everyone around beckam was mediocre, thats bullshiit,
beckam was just one player who could cross and score freekicks that was all, wat made him better than paolo di canio of westham then,
or david ginola of tottenham or even youseff chippo and hadji of coventry of that time, those guys were skillful,
and when i mean skillful i mean skillfull, beckham wasn't skillful, he never was,
the fish about beckham
a hansome blond haired british boy
above average talent, scored a few free kicks
married a pop singer
very popular in asia = revenues from shirt sales. endorsements etc
thats about it. exceptional? its just like the case of the town of blind men - the one eyed man will always be the king
dude england held out against a portuguese team playing a lone striker - pauleta for all the game so its a big deal for terry and rio to hold just pauleta?? gime a break. in free kicks NO i don't think bekham was better, but due to the EPL HYPE and popularity compared to ligue 1, it would appear so if you don't examine closely.
puyol is vulnerable? so is rio, far more even, i still remember how he was disgraced by yakubu and mendieta last season, they made him look like the overpaid yahoo he is. even mr terry, he looked like a schoolboy who was scared of playing on the big stage for most of the WC, amking silly erros all over.
Juninho is the best free-kick taker these days but i believe Juninho is nowhere near David Beckham in his days.
Beckham bends free-kick and it was a delight to watch in his United days.
The best of Beckham is better than the best of Juninho. Agreed?
Cannavaro/Nesta will not displace Rio/Terry in England as well so its 50-50.
Did u see how Rio n Terry locked down the English defence against Portugal?
11 men against 10 and England held out for 120 mins.
talking about dead ball specialists juninho is still the best not beckham. his success rate is far better than any of his peers currently playing. beckham gives good crosses huh? I agree but in his hey day too figo gave the best crosses too, or will you deny that jackal? (not forgetting figo won player of the year)
england is hype, simply put. cannavaro and nesta are the best CB's anywhere, terry and rio are decent, but trust me neither of them will displace ayala or lucio from argentina or brazil, nor puyol from spain so quit the hype.
hear your self,
agreed, to me his crosses are the best in world, true,
that is also true
now thats the problem, back to his manutd days, not now anymore, he's still got the crosses. though
he's not as dependable as before,
back in 'em days again, history, is yesterday, the future is wat we need.
that was then,
David Beckham is a rare gem.
He is a very good winger and his crosses and ball delivery is top draw.
Beckham is also a dead-ball specialist and u need to go back to his Man Utd days to see what i am saying.
U might argue he is not as good like he used to but one cannot overlook his contributions back in 'em days.
Any Beckham's cross to Andy Cole/Dwight Yorke is a goal. Its as sure as the rising of the sun in the east.
Camaronesi on the other hand is just a bully in the park.
He does not cross but simply keeps the ball and make short passes.
Camaronesi's ball delivery is nuthing to write home about and he only features in teams because of his toughness and hhe tackles hard.
He doesn't really contribute positively to the team's mentality.
An average player by all standards.
I have said i wont argue anything with u again but 4 the benefit of the forum
1Nesta and Cannavarro have been the best central defensive pairing in the World for many years now and will start ahead of any other central defenders in this world ( Ferdinand and Terry included).
Infact we dont need to argue this. WHICH ENGLISH 'WORLD CLASS' PLAYER WILL STROLL INTO THE ITALIAN, ARGENTINE OR BRAZILIAN NATIONAL SIDES?
I analyzed it wing for wing Letz see u do that. Stop telling me poo like precision freekicks and Beckham this and that.
( In the case of freekicks 4 eg Pirlo Totti and DelPiero are all experts)
Man-U lavished 18.6m on Carrick is good news to me. He has a vacant position to play, he's not just coming in as a spectator (unlike SWP). In my opinion, he is worth it, but I must commend Jol, Zokora is much better to replace him and is just 8mill (all because he's not English).
Now that UEFA has made it a rule that each club must have at least 4 home grown players (home grown weeds) in their 25-man squad for the champions league, local players should have more value (as has always been in the case of Ferdinand, SWF, Rooney and Walcott and now Carrick). Remember chelsea were ready to pay 28mill for Gerrard.
Frankly speaking, it depends on who's buying the player. I don't think Arsenal would have bought him at that tag, neither would Wigan. Chelsea paid 30m for Shevy, Even Free Paying Madrid managed to squeeze out 10 mill for RVN. If Chelsea needed him, I believe they could pay 25m. If Chelsea were to buy Carrick, with that hype, don't be surprised, for 27mill (+ he's English in the UEFA rule age).
Man-U has the likes of Rooney, Neville, Carrick, Ferdinand as their English Reps now and with the sale of Viera to Inter, Carrick has sure retained more than the No. 16 jersey of Keane (no competition) and as such freed Alan Smith and move him to a deeper role. He needs two seasons to prove himself, but for all I care, he's English and the league being devoid of quality home based players, (see the top scorers and assists since 2000) the hype should have added more to his value.
Hey @ Kituan
English players World Class? I used to laugh when just b/4 the world cup, they were calling themselves the most complete team after Brazil and all that. Who are they kidding?
The only English player that i think is standard is Gerrard and a few others are very good. Most of the rest are mediocare and WILL NOT MAKE ANY FIRST TEAM IN ANY COUNTRY.
iL USE TWO OF THE COUNTRIES TO SHOW U Brazil and Italy ( wing 4 wing)
GK Buffon b/4 Robinson
RB Zambrotta b/4 Neville Same
CB Nesta b/4 Ferdinand Same
CB Cannavaro b/4 Terry Same
LB Cole vs Grosso ( u guyz decide) Same
RCM Gattuso b/4 Beckham RWM Camaronaise vs Beckham
CM Pirlo b/4 Gerrard Pirlo b/4 Carrick + Hargreaves
LM Joe cole vs Perotta ( il leave u guyz to determine) Same
CAM Totti b/4 Lampard Gattuso b/4 Gerrard
ST Gilardino v Rooney ( " ' "" ) Totti b/4 Lampard
ST Toni b/4 Owen Toni b/4 Rooney
With a change of Formation Camaronsi comes in and itz one striker 4 Italy and Either Crrick or Hargreaves 4 England.and thatz 4 the second column
I think the only guy that would make the ITALIAN Squad from England is probably Ashley Cole and Maybe Gerrard if their is a change of formation, he might be selected ahead of Perrota
Dida b/4 Robinson
Cafu b/4 Neville
Lucio v Ferdinand
Juan v Terry
Ashley cole v Carlos
Kaka b/4 Beckham
Gerrard v Emerson
Ze Roberto b/4 Joe Cole
Ronaldinho b/4 Lampard
Ronaldo b/4 Ronney
Adriano b/4 Owen
THE ONLY English player that can make it is probably GERRARD and Maybe Ashley Cole
THE AVERAGE ENGLISH PLAYERIS 70 PERCENT HYPE
but not all english players fall into that category, lets see my own version of their ratings
ashley cole (40% hype + 40% determination + 20% skill)
joe cole (30% hype + 50% skill + 20% determination)
john terry (40% hype + 50% determination + 10% skill)
steven gerrard( 10% hype + 40% determination + 40% skill)
david beckam (80% hype + 15% determination + 5% skill)
frank lampard (70% hype + 20% determination + 10% skill)
frankly this is what i think,

Joseph John Cole (born November 8, 1981 in Archway, London) is a professional footballer who plays for Chelsea FC of the English Premier League and the England national team. He is a right-footed midfielder with an avowed preference for a central position but has enjoyed most success playing as a left or right winger at Chelsea, due to his fine dribbling abilities and ball control.

Cole was born in Archway, North London and was raised a couple of miles away in Somers Town in Camden. A child prodigy who received national media attention as a schoolboy and a product of the famed West Ham United youth system, Cole was long touted as the hottest prospect in English football with Manchester United reportedly offering to pay £10 million for his services as a 16 year old. Playing in a mould similar to former England favourite Paul Gascoigne, he quickly progressed through the West Ham ranks before making his first-team debut at the age of 17. Cole became club captain at 19. Whilst his sublime touch and dribbling prowess won him many plaudits (and several England caps), his career stagnated in his last few years at the club, especially after West Ham parted company with manager Harry Redknapp.
In 2003, Cole moved to Chelsea as part of Roman Abramovich's 'Russian Revolution' for £6,600,000 with a view to establishing himself in the England national team. However, due to the stiff competition for places at the club, he initially struggled to hold down a place in the team for both Chelsea and England under Claudio Ranieri.
According to Cole, Ranieri had wanted to send him to Russia on loan to CSKA Moscow just days after finalising his transfer. Cole refused to move and stayed in Chelsea, but figured irregularly throughout the first half of season 2003-2004 and was reduced to a peripheral figure after Ranieri signed Scott Parker in January 2004.
He was a squad member at Euro 2004, but did not play.
Cole had long been praised for his technical skills and creativity but criticised for his lack of all-round contribution to the team and the inadequacy of his end product. After the arrival of new Chelsea manager José Mourinho in 2004, Cole initially continued to struggle, though he soon found himself making more appearances than he did during Ranieri's stewardship.
In January 2005, Cole was publicly criticised by Mourinho after scoring the winner against Liverpool for neglecting his defensive duties. Mourinho famously described Cole as a player 'with two faces', with one 'face' that he liked (referring to Cole's vision and technical ability) and another 'face' that he did not (referring to Cole's lack of enthusiasm for defensive duties).
Cole responded positively to this and took advantage of injuries to other players (most notably Arjen Robben) to become one of the stars of Chelsea's Premiership title winning team in 2004-05. He also won a starting place in the England team on the left side of midfield, which England had struggled to fill adequately for several years. Cole's form saw him hit a run of goals towards the end of the season, and his goal against Norwich (blasted in from 22 yards off his weaker left foot) was voted in the top ten goals of the season in the Premier League for 2004/2005.
At Chelsea, the strong competition for places has meant that he has struggled to hold a first team role, with Damien Duff, Arjen Robben and Shaun Wright-Phillips providing stiff competition. Doubts have been expressed over his ability to play in the left wing position for the England national side, with some calling for natural left-footerStewart Downing and even pacy teenager Theo Walcott to be given a chance.
However, Cole played in the England side throughout 2005 and early 2006, competing in internationals against Denmark, Northern Ireland, and Argentina. As of 2 March 2006, he has earned 30 caps for England (11 as a starting player) and scored five goals.
Cole scored 10 goals for Chelsea in 2004/2005 and he also registered in the Champions League against Real Betis. Although Cole prefers to play in the centre of midfield, it appears as though his opportunities will come as a wide attacker under Mourinho.
In January 2006 Cole received publicity as the loser in a drunken dustup over Page 3 Girl Keeley Hazell, triggered when another admirer saw the two "getting on well [and] copped the right hump about it." (Link NSFW)
In the first half of the 2005-2006 season Cole enhanced his reputation considerably, moved up the Chelsea pecking order ahead of Wright-Phillips and Duff, and was named in the PFA's team of the season. His status was such that by March 2006, he was considered Chelsea's most creative player by many pundits, and his omission from the starting lineup by Mourinho, who was testing a narrower 'midfield diamond' approach, was held up as the principal cause of Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to Liverpool F.C. in the semi-finals of the 2006 FA Cup competition.
In June 2006, Cole was entered in the top ten goals of the season for the second season running, this time for an effort in a 3-0 victory against Manchester United where he produced marvellous sleight of foot to evade Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic before slamming the ball high past Edwin Van Der Sar.
Later that month, Cole extended his contract with Chelsea FC for another 4 seasons. Cole's position at Stamford Bridge appears to have been strengthened by the departure of Duff to Newcastle United on 23 July 2006.
His sparkling displays in England's friendlies leading up to the 2006 World Cup have also enhanced his reputation ahead of the summer's showcase finals in Germany.
In May 2006 he was confirmed in the England squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, ahead of Chelsea teammate Shaun Wright-Phillips. He played on the left-side of midfield in England's opening game against Paraguay on June 10, 2006.
On June 20, 2006, England drew with Sweden, in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, with a final score of 2-2. This result can be attributed to Cole's spectacular play. He scored a spectacular goal in the 34th minute of the match and got an assist in the 85th when he sent in a beautiful ball to Steven Gerrard. At the end of the match, Budweiser announced that Cole received the Man of the Match.
nah, he had an above average season and peeps are goin gaga over him, plus the fluke WC goal. I said he's decent, but nowhere near the hype england give him. its not cuzz he's chelski, even ashley is too hyped. he's good no doubt, but not as good as they want us to believe. thats the major flaw of majority of englishmen. let me see joe do his 'moves' against a quality european side, not scoring goals against senderos+flamini patch patch defence.
Am a gooner like you are but please do not say Joe Cole is an over-hyped player cos you will be unfair to the boy
Why not put into consideration how this boy runs rings around opponents not minding whether they got big names or not, pls the guy is good and for the better part of last year he proved to be one of the best blues despite his many wranglings with Maureen (as Loyika loves to call him), he is one player that knows how to open up the defences of opponents, so why not give it to him ?
