What is the population of Ghana? What did it use to be several years ago? And what is so special about people living there? Find out more from the article.

Population of Ghana

In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about population and demographics in Ghana now and years before.

Population in Ghana in 2016

In the year of 2016, the population of this country was approximately 28,4 million people. Thanks to the technologies of the modern times, people can now see how many people exactly lives in which country, how many people were born or died on a particular day. As of December 16, 2016, at least 14200 people first saw the world in Ghana. What a fantastic news!

However, around four hundred people have taken their last breath his day too. The dynamics show that this year the population grew by several percents. As there were at least 660 thousand fewer people in the state the previous year. The population is steadily increasing, as there are more people born than dying every day.

To illustrate this statement here are the exact figures. Scholars say that in 2016, 2544 individuals were born every day. Meanwhile, only 696 deaths occurred on a daily basis. Apart from that, at least thirty people moved outside of country every day this year.

Since external migration remained on the previous year level, the population declined by 10 821 due to the migration reasons. It means that “the number of people who leave Ghana to settle permanently in another country (emigrants) will prevail over the number of individuals who move into the country (to which they are not native) to settle there as permanent residents (immigrants).”

At the beginning of this year, the population density, as it is called in scientific terms was about 117 people per each square kilometer. It is not too bad, considering that the total territory of the state is slightly more than 237 square kilometers.

the current population of Ghana

Now, as we know what the population of Ghana is, let’s find out more about its peculiarities. As the scholars explain, the average age of people from Ghana is varying depending on the area. However, thirty-seven percent of people are under the age of fifteen, while the dominant sixty percent are aged between fifteen and sixty years old. Only four percent of the total population is older than sixty years old.

There is also such a term as age dependency ratio which basically is a proportion of people who are generally not in the labor force (the dependents) to the workforce of a country (the productive part of the population). The dependent part includes the population under 15 years old and people aged 65 and over. The productive part of population accordingly consists of the population between 15 and 64 years.

As the average figures show around 66.7% is the dependency ratio of population in Ghana. And here is what they say this means for the country: “It indicates that the dependent part of the population is more than a half of the working part. It means that the active population (labor force) in Ghana must provide goods for itself and cover expenditure on children and aged persons (this population is more than a half of working population). The value of more than 50% shows that the pressure on the productive population in Ghana is relatively high.”

Apart from this information, let’s see what life expectancy numbers in Ghana are. We have found out that both men and women on the average live as long as sixty-one years. Women on average live longer than men. They live approximately sixty-two years, while men usually only hit the age of sixty years.

This shows that life expectancy in Gana is lower than average for the world, which is about seventy-one. There might be many reasons for this including the living conditions, ecological situation, etc.

Here is another quote from an official source which will show us and explain the literacy situation in Ghana. They say that " 13 517 507 individuals or 76.67% of the adult population (aged 15 years and above) in Ghana can read and write. Accordingly, about 4 113 793 grownups are illiterate.

The literacy rate for the adult male population is 82.04% (7 193 829 persons). 1 575 069 are illiterate.

The literacy rate for the adult female population is 71.35% (6 323 678 persons). 2 538 724 are illiterate. Youth literacy rates are 91.32% and 89.86% for males and females accordingly. The overall youth literacy rate is 90.6%. Youth literacy rate definition covers the population between the ages of 15 to 24 years.”

This information was taken from the official UNESCO data.

Despite the slow growth, this tendency is very stable. The data shows that since 1951 till 2016 the population in Ghana has grown significantly from less than 7.5 million to almost 28,4 million. This is a good statistics for average African countries. It is even better than for Ivory Coast.

This situation with the population in Ghana also influences the general economy condition. In fact, the Public Debt clock together with Country Meters stated that Ghana had their GDP of around $108 billion in 2016. Meanwhile, this resulted in the GDP in the amount of $3811 per person. However, the annual number is around $4050.

Apart from that, the national debt for this country is about $63,3 billion this year, which estimates up to $2200 of a National debt for each person living in the state.

The dominant religion for this population is Christianity. They amount up to more than 71% of the total population.Meanwhile, from that around 28% are Charismatic Christians, more than !8% are Evangelical Christians, and 13% are Roman Catholics.

the total population of Ghana

Slightly more than 17% of people are Muslims, while 5% believe in local pagan religions. Around 5% of people are atheists who do not admit the existence of God whatsoever.

The biggest ethnic group of Ghana is Akan who is taking up to 48% of the population, then come Mole-Dagbons with around 16%, Ewe with 14%, Ga-Dangme with 7,5%, Gurma with around 6%, Guang with 4%, Grusi 3% and the rest in smaller groups.

Unfortunately, the fertility rate dropped for Ghanaians in the recent years from almost 4 to 3,3 on average. It is important to note that this rate is smaller for people living in the cities and higher for people inhabiting rural areas.

And finally, most of the population of Ghana speak English as their first language. However, they also have at least eight other languages at their disposal. Among these languages are Twi, Ewe, Dagbani, Dangme, Ge, Nzemaa, Kasem, and Gonja.

This is what you should know about Ghana population. We hope you found this information useful!
